Chorus Love Stories: Malcolm & Seth
If it hadn't been for choir, they might never have met.
Malcolm Gaines and Seth Brenzel met on January 20, 1996, in Room C—the San Francisco Symphony Chorus's rehearsal room—in Davies Symphony Hall.
Malcolm had just moved to San Francisco and immediately joined the Chorus because he knew it was in such a place that he’d find the community he needed in a new city. They went on their first date on February 9 of that year, and have been together ever since.
The couple has gotten married on three different occasions: February 16, 2004 at San Francisco City Hall, when the mayor declared it legal in San Francisco for same-sex couples to be married; April 15, 2006, in the company of family and friends, including a group of singers from the SFS Chorus who sang at the wedding; and again on November 2, 2008, when it was legal in California for same-sex couples to be married prior to the passage of Proposition 8. They often remark how fortunate they feel to have met through singing, and since they have remained in the chorus, they return to the scene of their first meeting dozens of times each year.
