A Toast to Spontaneity

Michael Shaughnessy
Ah, to be young again. Reading Cory Davis's "Unlikely Rock Stars" piece made me yearn to be back at university again, if only to experience the exuberance and coolness of today's collegiate a cappella renaissance. Back in my day I'd have been looked at as if I had two heads if I'd suggested being part of such a thing. Mind you, I tended to surround myself with thick-necked Neanderthals whose musical interests were limited to Led Zeppelin and Iron Butterfly, and whose knowledge of vocalizing began and ended with bawdy drinking songs. Good fellows by and large, but not likely to be populating a chorus, then or now.

The link takes you to an great video of the a cappella arrangement, made more amazing by the fact that all the parts are sung by the same person. Wizardry!

I love impromptu singing! It really shows you how well you know the piece. Coming back from a rally on the Metro (Washington, DC's subway), a few members of my chorus found ourselves spotlighted. We were all wearing the same T-shirt, proclaiming our singing group, and all the riders wanted a show. We managed one very good song and one mediocre song before our stop. That was probably very good timing--I'm not sure how a third song would have fared!
